A new book about William Chong, a HMS Windrush passenger (June 1948) who came to the UK, became a coal miner and achieved beyond expectation is being launched on Windrush Day, 22nd June 2021.

The book documents William Chong’s migration journey from Kingston, Jamaica as a 19 year old, landing at Tilbury Docks, Essex London in 1948. His story is filled with adventure, challenges and triumph and stories of resilience working as a coal miner in Penywaun Colliery, north Wales. The well researched book, provides detailed narratives and historical references to give a broad understanding of the Windrush era, from 1948 to the present day Windrush scandal. The inspiration book contains personal interview accounts with Chong and family, references for places to visit related to the life of Chong, archive images and references to the experiences of former black miners in the UK, the Windrush Scandal and many achievements including the Windrush Awards, supported by The Windrush Project, Nottingham.
